How do you read the Brisbane Street Directory, its so confusing?

i know how to find the pages that the streets are on.. I just dont exactly know which way to go... Like how to do you tell which way is north and which way is south etc? Its just really confusing you know?

1. it will give you the map number first, then it will give you a number and a letter. when you turn to the page or map 38 for example you will see letters down one side and numbers across the other side of the page. So now you have looked up let say stanley street, Brisbane it should give you map number, then another number, plus a letter. Turn to the page and use the last number said and letter to run your fingers along at the same time until they met, and in this area you should easily spot the street you are looking for.
